Common duiker

Sylvicapra grimmia (Linnaeus, 1758)
French: Cephalophe couronné
German: Kronenducker
Swahili: Nsya

Subspecies
Sylvicapra grimmia madoqua
Sylvicapra grimmia nyansae
Sylvicapra grimmia orbicularis
Sylvicapra grimmia pallidior

Description
Total length: (m) 70 - 105 cm (f) 90 - 115 cm
Tail length: 7 - 19.5 cm
Shoulder height: 45 - 70 cm
Weight (m): 11 - 21.5 kg, (f) 12 - 25.5 kg
Gestation: ~ 190 days

This duiker shows similarity to deers with a long crest of hair on the top of the head. The body coloration varies from grey to reddish-brown with paler underparts whereas the front of the legs are usually darker than the rest. Only males which are smaller than the ewes carry sharp-pointed horns.

Distribution
The common duiker is the most widespread of all. It is only absent in the lowland of equatorial forests and true deserts.
S. g. madoqua: Ethiopia
S. g. nyansea: Sudan, Ethiopia
S. g. orbicularis: Somalia
S. g. pallidior: Sudan, Ethiopia

Ecology
It is often found close to human habitation. Common duikers show a wide habitat tolerance also because of their independence of drinking water, but open country is avoided. They live usually solitary or in pairs. In areas of high food availability, they occur at high densities. Rams don't tolerate another male duiker and defend their territories against intruders. They are active mainly at night or feed in the cooler morning. Their diet shows a wide variety: flowers, fruits, leaves, seeds, fungi, crops, insects and animal food.

Conservation Status

IUCN Red List Category, ver 3.1:

Trend:
Most of the populations are assessed as stable in Ethiopia, but with unknown numbers. Its status in the Ogaden is unclear. The species is most probably extinct in Djibouti.
