Description
Total length: (m) 2.4-3.2 m, (f) 2.1-2.4 m
Tail length: 55 - 78 cm
Shoulder height: (m) 1.5-1.75 m, (f) 1.4-1.6 m
Weight (m): 450 - 900 kg, (f) 300 - 500 kg
Gestation: 9 months

This extremely large bovine shows 12 vertical white stripes on a sandy body. Like the Common eland the Giant eland has a pendulous dewlap on the throat. The ears are broad and rounded. The spiral of the horns which both sexes carry are more open than in the Common eland.

T. derbianus gigas: SW Sudan

Ecology
Giant eland prefer more densly wooded savanna areas with accesss to drinking water. The shy animal moves long distances while their seasonal movements. Bulls are often solitary. Others form small herds of fewer than 25 individuals.

Trend:
This species is on the verge of local extinction in the northern part of its former range in the southwest, e.g. Radom N.P. in Southern Darfour Province where there has been substantial encroachment of settlement and heavy poaching, but it may still occur in the vast expanse of tsetse-infested woodland in Bahr el Ghazal and Western Equatoria Provinces. It was known to occur in Southern N.P. in 1994-1995.
