The Arabic-derived name 'xirapha' means 'fast walker'. They can run at a speed of 60 kph.
The world's tallest mammal has a very long neck and its back is sloping down from
shoulders to rump. Its fur shows an unmistakable patchwork pattern which varies
in the subspecies. Both sexes carry one pair of short bony horns. The maximum age is
about 25 years.

Distribution
Giraffes are formerly found widespread throughout the drier savannahs of Africa, wherever trees grow. They now occur up to 2,000 m but not in precipitous hilly country.

Ecology
They usually run in herds of up to 30 individuals, but these groups are relatively unstable. Because of the daily amount of about 60 kg, they are dependet on food trees whose leafs they gnaw with their 45 cm tongue.

Trend: ?
The Reticulated giraffe occurs only sporadically in some protected areas in Ethiopia, like
Borana Controlled Hunting Area, in Omo and Mago National Parks and maybe in Gambella
National Park. Recent interviews with herdsmen in Awdher and Moyale region of the
southern Ogaden revealed that giraffes still occur in this area in few numbers.
