German: Afrikanischer Büffel; Schwarzbüffel
Swahili: Nyati, Mbogo

Other relevant subspecies
S. caffer caffer
S. caffer aequinoctialis
S. caffer nanus

Description
Total length: 170 - 340 cm
Tail length: 50 - 80 cm
Shoulder height: 100 - 170 cm
Weight: 250 - 850 kg
Gestation: 330 - 345 days

It is the only wild cattle species in Africa. The coat of this massive ox varies from red (Forest buffalo) to black in the larger Savannah buffalo (S. c. caffer). Although the most important sense of open-country animals is normally vision, buffalos rely on their hearing with their tasselled ears, following their forest origins. The newborn calf which has a weight of about 40 kg is able to keep up withing a few hours after birth. African buffalos have a protracted gestation for their body size which is supposable an adaptation to their seasonal environment. Interannual variation in the birth distribution is an indication for plasticity in the date of conception.

Distribution
S. c. caffer: C, S Ethiopia; S Somalia
S. c. aequinoctialis: W, SW Ethiopia; S, SE Sudan
S. c. nanus: S Sudan

Ecology
Their need for water limit their distribution so they are found not far away from water. Savannah buffalos prefer open woodland savannah and can build large herds (up to thousands) of mixed sex and age. Forest buffalos are one of the least known large mammals in Africa. Forest clearing are crucial places for this subspecies.

Conservation Status

IUCN Red List Category, ver 3.1:

Trend:
In Ehtiopia the buffalo is now restricted to the South-western part of the country and
survives in comparatively low number in protected areas like Omo-Mago National Parks and
adjacent regions. It is likely that the species has disappeared from its former ranges in the
Ogaden region.

European Collection Plan: ...
RCP status: EEP, Danny de Man, Banham, established 2010

Recommendations
The future status of this species is closely linked to the future of protected areas and well-managed hunting zones, since it is a frequent target of poachers.
